Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay teamed up to create OWN’s newest television show Queen Sugar. Set in Louisiana, Queen Sugar is the story of three siblings that move back to their family’s farm after their father passes. Leaving the trio to sort out how to maintain the land and family business. DuVernay makes her television debut with Queen Sugar, the first show she created along with directing and being the executive producer. One of the most important aspects of creating this show for DuVernay was having a diverse, “inclusive” crew. Therefore DuVernay hired only female directors to film the first season of Queen Sugar proving that the only way to really empower yourself is to empower those around. Check out the video below on how DuVernay chose the crew and directors for Queen Sugar.
Queen Sugar premieres TONIGHT, September 10 at 10pm ET on OWN!
