James Brown Biopic Trailer!!!

Finally!! This James Brown biopic seems long overdue considering the “Godfather of Soul” passed seven years ago! But patience is a virtue and I am truly excited for this new biopic, Get On Up, starring Chadwick Boseman!

The Universal Studios film recounts Brown’s ruff and poverty stricken childhood, his time in prison and his rise to super stardom. Besides the funky dance moves and singing the movie gets very personal reliving the story of Brown’s mother (Viola Davis) abandoning him at age 6, and his aunt (Octavia Spencer) who raised him in a brothel. With a star filled cast including Jill Scott, Tika Sumpter, Walking Dead vet Lennie James, and Dan Aykroyd this film allows fans to see another side of the talented “Godfather of Soul.”

In a 2013 Rolling Stone article Brown’s daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas revealed that her father was intrigued but wary of any movie based on his life. Especially since it would dramatize his troubled life and drug problems. “Daddy was hardly looking for anybody to do his life story,” she said. “He was flattered, but it wasn’t like he was super-excited about it. He wanted to make sure that these things that came out that weren’t so great wouldn’t look so bad.”

Ironically enough a James Brown documentary will premiere this month at the Tribeca Film Festival. Alex Gibney’s Untitled James Brown Documentary will screen as a work in progress on the closing night of the 12-day film festival on April 27th. Gibney’s documentary covers Browns life from 1933 to 1974, and how Brown was a pioneer journeying from rhythm and blues to funk.
Get On Up is set to release in August! So keep your eyes open and mark you calendars!
